Content calendar for GEO: what to publish and when

A content calendar for GEO helps you get mentioned by AI more often, step by step. Includes an example plan per month and per quarter you can use straight away.

A content calendar for GEO is a plan of what you publish and improve, and when, with the goal of getting AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude to mention you more often. The difference from a regular content calendar: you do not just plan new blog posts, but also improving existing pages, collecting reviews and working on mentions on other sites. With a steady rhythm you keep going without it taking too much time.

Why a calendar for GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is not a one-off project. AI models change, competitors publish new content and customers' questions shift. If you only do something now and then, you see little result. If you take a small step every week, you slowly build visibility. Read how long that takes in how long does GEO take.

A calendar helps you to:

  • make choices instead of trying to do everything at once;
  • keep a steady rhythm;
  • see what you have done and what it delivered.

The four kinds of work in your calendar

Spread your time across four kinds of tasks:

  1. New content. Pages or articles that answer a customer question you do not cover yet.
  2. Improving existing content. A clear answer at the top, current prices, an added FAQ. This often pays off faster than something new.
  3. Sources beyond your website. Reviews, business profiles, trade directories, local press and comparison sites.
  4. Technical work and measuring. Allowing AI crawlers, structured data, and checking every week what AI says.

Example plan per month

Say you have about four hours a week. A month could then look like this:

  • Week 1: measure and choose. Look at your visibility per question and per model. Pick one question where competitors are mentioned and you are not.
  • Week 2: content. Write or improve the page that answers that question. Start with a direct answer. Use the tips from writing content AI cites.
  • Week 3: sources. Ask five happy customers for a review. Check that your details are the same everywhere.
  • Week 4: beyond your site. Contact one website that AI often cites as a source, such as a local news site or trade directory.

That gives you a new or better page, more reviews and a new chance of an external mention every month.

Example plan per quarter

Look further ahead too. A quarterly plan for a plumber in Zwolle could look like this:

Month 1: get the basics right

  • Improve the about page and service pages.
  • Complete the Google Business Profile.
  • An FAQ page with the ten most frequently asked questions.

Month 2: service area and questions

  • Pages per town in the service area, with real information for each town. See service area pages per town.
  • A price guide page for the most requested jobs.
  • Collect reviews after every job.

Month 3: authority and comparisons

  • An honest comparison page, for example "Repair the leak or replace the pipe?".
  • Contact the local paper or a city blog about a striking project.
  • Review: which questions have improved, which have not?

A museum or municipality plans differently. There, it is more often about seasons: exhibitions, school holidays, events and recurring questions about opening hours and how to get there. An online shop plans around seasons and product launches. Start that content a few weeks before demand peaks.

Tips to keep it up

  • Keep it small. Better an hour every week than a whole day once a quarter.
  • Use your own customer questions. Every new question from a customer is a possible topic.
  • Reuse. An answer you give in an email can become an FAQ question.
  • Plan maintenance. Put it in the calendar twice a year: check prices, opening hours and team details.
  • Look at results. Move tasks around based on what you measure. If something does not work, try a different approach.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I publish?
There is no fixed number. One good, useful page a month is already a strong basis for many small businesses. Quality matters more than quantity.

Should I only write new blog posts?
No. Improving existing pages and collecting reviews are at least as important.

When will I see an effect?
That varies per model and per topic. Live search can have a quick effect, but you only know for sure once you have measured for a few weeks.
