How long does GEO take to show results?
How long does GEO take to work? An honest answer: what you can expect week by week and month by month, and why live search moves faster than an AI model's training data.
GEO rarely shows results within a few days. Changes that AI assistants pick up through live search often become visible within a few weeks. What a model knows from its training data only changes when a new version of that model is released, which can take months. So nobody can honestly promise you a fixed timeline or a guarantee.
Two ways AI learns about your business
To see why it takes time, it helps to separate two routes.
- Live search. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude can search the web during a conversation. They read current pages and summarise them. When you improve your website, an assistant can pick that up once the page has been crawled again and ranks well in the search results it relies on.
- Training data. A model also carries knowledge it gained during training. That knowledge stays fixed until the makers release a new version, and as a business you will not know in advance when that happens.
Perplexity almost always searches live. With other assistants it depends on the question and the settings. You can read more in why AI gives a different answer every time.
What to expect in the first weeks
The first weeks are mostly about checking that the basics are right. A heating installer in Zwolle who improves his service pages and completes his Google Business Profile may quickly see an assistant with live search mention the correct opening hours or services. That is a good sign.
Do not expect a big jump in how often you are recommended at this stage. Pages need to be crawled again first, and then they need to show up for the searches an assistant runs in the background.
What to expect after a few months
After a few months things get more interesting. Most of your changes have had time to take effect. Signals from outside your website start to count as well, such as new reviews, a mention in a local paper or a listing in an industry directory.
These signals build up slowly. A bakery in Leiden will not collect twenty new reviews or three local press articles in a single week. That is exactly why it pays to start early. See also mentions on other sites that AI cites.
Why it differs per business
How quickly you see results depends on several factors:
- How good your website already is and how often search engines visit it
- How much competition there is in your sector and region
- Whether other websites already mention you
- Which questions you track: specific questions often move sooner than broad ones
- Whether there are technical blocks, such as AI crawlers being turned away
A law firm in a big city usually has more ground to cover than a specialist bike repair shop in a small village.
Measure from day one
The biggest risk is not knowing whether anything works. AI answers vary from one try to the next, so a single test tells you very little. Track a fixed set of questions on a fixed schedule from the start. That way you see a trend rather than chance.
Keep a note of what you changed and when. If your visibility rises a few weeks later, you will know which step probably helped. How to measure whether AI mentions your business explains how to set this up.
Be careful with promises
If someone tells you that you are guaranteed to appear in ChatGPT within two weeks, be sceptical. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says. What you can do is make the right information about your business easy to find, earn mentions from trusted sources and measure patiently.
