Service area pages per town: how to do them right

Service area pages per town help customers and AI see where you work. Here is how to build them properly, with unique content for each town and no duplicate content.

A service area page for a town makes sense when you genuinely work there and have something specific to say about it. Give each page unique content, such as projects, travel time, local situations and reviews from that town. Do not copy the same text with only the town name swapped, because that helps neither customers nor AI.

Why towns matter for AI

Many questions people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude include a place. "Which chimney sweep in Hilversum is reliable?" or "good children's physio in Nieuwegein". When AI searches live, it looks for sources that clearly connect that place with that service. If your website only says "we work across the whole central Netherlands", it is hard for AI to link you to a specific town.

A good service area page makes that link clear. It also helps customers, who want to know whether you will come to them.

The problem with duplicate content

The familiar trap is a template with twenty near-identical pages: "Plumber in Utrecht", "Plumber in Zeist", "Plumber in Houten", all with the same text. Search engines usually see pages like that as low value. Google also names this kind of page in its guidelines as something to avoid.

The same idea applies to AI. A page that says nothing new gives no reason to cite it. It also makes your website messy for visitors.

When to create a separate page

Create a page for a town if:

  • you regularly have customers there or have a branch there
  • you can show concrete projects or reviews there
  • there is something specific to say about your service in that town

If you only work somewhere occasionally, mention it on a general service area page. You do not need a page for every village.

What a good service area page contains

A made-up electrician from Utrecht creates a page for Zeist. It contains:

  1. a short introduction: which services he offers in Zeist and how quickly he can be there
  2. two or three projects in Zeist, with neighbourhood, type of job and a photo
  3. a review from a customer in Zeist, with permission
  4. something local, such as the older homes in certain neighbourhoods where fuse boxes often need replacing
  5. practical details: call-out charge, parking, access
  6. a clear way to get in touch

That makes the page genuinely different from the ones for Houten or Nieuwegein. It answers the question of someone in Zeist.

Write for the reader in that town

Use the questions people in that town ask. A gardener in Wassenaar may get different questions than one in a new-build area of Zoetermeer: larger gardens and old trees, or small urban gardens. Let that show in your text. To find those questions, read which questions do customers ask AI.

Technical points

  • Give each page its own title and description with the service and the town.
  • Link from an overview page to all your service area pages so they are easy to find.
  • Use the areaServed property in your structured data to describe your service area. There is an example in structured data: a LocalBusiness example.
  • Do not list a fake address in a town where you have no branch. That is misleading and can cause problems with your Google Business Profile.

Keep it in proportion

Start with the towns that matter most to your business. Three strong pages are worth more than twenty thin ones. Expand when you have new projects and reviews. Also add your service area to your Google Business Profile, so the same information is consistent everywhere.

Measure per town

If you work in several towns, measure per town whether AI mentions you. You will see where you are already visible and where a competitor takes over. This suits local businesses well, see also AI visibility for SMEs. Want a first impression? The free check shows where you stand across five questions.
