Why does AI mention your competitor and not you? 6 common causes

You have been in business for years, have happy customers, and still ChatGPT only names the competitor. These are the six causes we see most often, with the fix.

It is a frustrating moment: you ask an AI assistant about your trade in your town and you see your competitor's name, but not yours. Even though you may have been around longer and have better reviews. Usually it comes down to one of these six causes.

1. Your website blocks AI

Some websites keep AI crawlers out through robots.txt, a firewall or a security plugin. Often the owner does not even know. Then a model cannot read your website.

Fix: check your robots.txt for rules about bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Ask your web developer whether a firewall is blocking bots.

2. Your website does not clearly say what you do and where

"Your partner in home comfort" may mean something to a person, not to an AI model. If your homepage does not literally say you are an installation company in Zwolle, a model has to guess.

Fix: state in the first sentence of your homepage what you do and in which places. Create pages per service.

3. Your competitor is on the sources AI cites

For local questions, AI assistants often read the same few review sites, comparison sites and lists. If your competitor is listed there and you are not, the choice is made quickly.

Fix: find out which sources AI cites in your industry and make sure you are well listed there. Read how in our article on mentions on other sites.

4. Your competitor has more or more recent reviews

Not necessarily better ones, but more, more recent and more detailed reviews. That gives a model more evidence to base a recommendation on.

Fix: ask every customer for a review, with a direct link. See our tips for more reviews.

5. Your details are not the same everywhere

An old address in a directory, a different spelling of your name on Facebook, a phone number that is no longer right. A model may then doubt whether it is the same business.

Fix: list all your listings and make everything match your website.

6. You are not visible for the questions that really matter

Maybe you are mentioned for "plumber The Hague", but not for "plumber with emergency service" or "boiler repair". Customers phrase their questions in many ways, and every question gives a different answer.

Fix: measure a set of questions your customers really ask, and see per question where you are and are not mentioned.

Where do you start?

You do not have to do everything at once. Start by measuring, so you see which cause applies to you. The free AI check shows for which questions your competitor is mentioned and you are not, which sources AI uses and what is missing on your website.
