Why reviews weigh so heavily in AI recommendations (and how to get more)

AI assistants do not just read your rating, but also what customers write. Here is how to get more and better reviews, in the places AI looks.

Ask an AI assistant for "a reliable painter in Amersfoort" and you often see it in the answer: "known for neat finishing", "customers are positive about the communication". Those sentences come from somewhere. Usually from reviews.

Why reviews matter so much to AI

An AI assistant wants to give an answer that helps the person asking. To do that it looks for evidence that a business is good. Reviews are the most direct source for that: there are many of them, they are recent and they are written by customers rather than by the business itself.

A model looks at more than the average rating:

  • Number: ten reviews say less than a hundred.
  • Recency: reviews from the last few months weigh more than reviews from five years ago.
  • Content: what exactly do customers write? "Arrived within an hour" fits a question about emergency service, "great with children" a question about a child-friendly dentist.
  • Spread: are your reviews on several platforms, or only one?

Which platforms should you be on?

That depends on your industry. Google reviews almost always matter. On top of that, every industry has its own platforms: for tradespeople, for healthcare, for hospitality.

The best way to find out for your industry: look at which sites AI assistants cite when you ask a question about your kind of business in your town. The report from the free AI check shows exactly which sources are cited.

How to get more reviews

  1. Ask at the right moment. Right after a successful job or appointment, a customer is most willing. Do not wait weeks.
  2. Make it easy. Send a direct link to your review page, for example in a short email or as a QR code on your invoice.
  3. Ask for details. "Would you mention in your review what we helped you with?" produces reviews with content AI can use.
  4. Ask everyone. Do not only select happy customers. That is fairer and on many platforms also a rule.
  5. Respond to reviews. A friendly, specific reply shows you care, including on a less positive review.

What not to do

Do not buy reviews, do not write them yourself and do not reward customers for a positive rating. Fake reviews are prohibited in the Netherlands and the EU, and review platforms actively remove them. They also tend to stand out: ten five-star reviews on one day without any content convince nobody, AI included.

How do you know it helps?

Reviews do not work overnight. Track whether you are mentioned more often for questions where quality matters, such as "best" or "reliable". With GEO tracking you see that every week, per question and per AI model.
