Prices on your website: why AI then recommends you more often
Customers increasingly ask AI what something costs. Why prices or price indications on your website help with AI recommendations, and how to show them clearly, even if you work with quotes.
Prices on your website help AI to recommend you. Customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude "how much does... cost" or "what is an affordable...". AI can only give a good answer if it finds price information somewhere. If that information is on your site, AI has a concrete reason to mention you. If it is not, AI is more likely to mention a competitor who is clear about it. You do not have to show every price down to the last cent. A starting price or a price indication already makes a big difference.
Why price matters so much to AI
Many questions put to AI assistants are about money. Think of:
- "How much does a new bathroom cost in Utrecht?"
- "Affordable physiotherapist in Groningen with no waiting list"
- "How much is a guided museum tour for a school class?"
- "Cheap but sturdy garden set for six people"
For prompts like these, AI looks for sources with concrete amounts. If it finds them on your site, it can mention you with a reason attached: "charges from €75 per hour, including call-out fee". That makes the answer more useful to the person asking and makes you more visible.
Without a price, the opposite often happens. AI does not mention you, or says "price on request". Sometimes AI even guesses an amount based on other sources. That guess may be wrong. Also read AI gives wrong information about your business.
What AI does with price information
AI uses prices in a few ways:
- To filter. For "affordable" or "under 500 euros", AI picks businesses that demonstrably fit.
- To compare. AI puts providers side by side. Anyone who does not state a price often falls outside the comparison.
- To describe. AI says what you are like: "mid-priced", "more expensive but including a guarantee". That affects sentiment, meaning how positively or negatively AI talks about you.
A clear pricing page is therefore also a way to close a content gap. That is a question for which competitors are mentioned and you are not. More on this in content gap analysis for AI.
How to show prices clearly
You do not need to create a complicated price list. These formats work well:
- Starting prices. "Boiler service from €89." Simple, honest and easy for AI to pick up.
- Price ranges. "An average bathroom renovation with us costs between €9,000 and €15,000." Explain what the difference depends on.
- A sample calculation. Describe a common job and what it costs. For example, a three-metre dormer window, including fitting and finishing.
- What is included. Call-out fee, VAT, materials, guarantee, aftercare. The clearer you are, the better AI can explain it.
- Packages. If you work with fixed packages, put them in a clear table with name, price and contents.
Put prices in plain text on the page, not only in an image or a PDF. AI crawlers read text most easily. Use a clear heading, such as "What does it cost?" or "Rates". Online shops can also use structured data for products and prices. See online store AI visibility.
Do you work with bespoke jobs or quotes?
Many businesses say: "Every job is different for us, so we do not publish prices." That is understandable, but you can still help:
- Give an indication. "Most projects fall between €2,000 and €6,000."
- Explain what determines the price. Surface area, materials, number of hours, urgency. That way AI understands why the price varies.
- State your hourly or day rate. Even if the total differs per job.
- Describe a few real examples. Without client names, but with what was done and roughly what it cost.
- Explain how quoting works. Is a quote free? How quickly do you get it? Does someone come round?
A marketing agency or a consultant could say, for example: "A strategy project usually starts at around €3,500." That is enough to fit into an AI answer.
Make sure your prices are correct everywhere
AI does not only look at your own site. It also reads your Google Business Profile, comparison sites, industry directories and reviews. If an old listing mentions a different rate, AI may repeat it.
So:
- Update prices on one central page and link to it.
- Check your business profile and listings on other sites. See consistent business details online.
- Add a date or year to your rates, so it is clear they are current.
Frequently asked questions
Will competitors not copy my prices?
They might, but they would find them through a quote anyway. For most businesses, the benefit of visibility outweighs that.
Will competitors' lower prices not put my customers off?
Explain what extra you offer. AI often repeats that explanation, such as "slightly more expensive, but including a five-year guarantee".
Is a starting price enough?
Often, yes. The main thing is that AI finds a concrete amount and clear context.
