Content gap analysis for AI: which topics are you missing?
Does AI mention your competitor but not you? Often the cause is a content gap: a question you have no good answer to. How to find and close those gaps, step by step.
A content gap analysis for AI shows which questions AI assistants answer by mentioning your competitors and not you, and which information is missing to change that. The "gap" is a topic or question you do not give a clear answer to online, while others do. Once you find and close those gaps, you give ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude a reason to mention you too.
What exactly is a content gap?
In traditional SEO, a content gap means keywords your competitor ranks for in Google and you do not. With AI it is broader. There are three kinds of gaps:
- Topic gap. You have no page about a subject customers ask about. For example, a plumber with no information about heat pumps.
- Answer gap. You do have a page, but it does not answer the question directly. It says "get in touch", but gives no price range or explanation of how you work.
- Source gap. Your own website is fine, but you are not on the sites AI uses as sources. Think of comparison sites, trade directories or local news sites.
The last type is often overlooked. Read more in mentions on other sites.
Step 1: choose the questions
Start with a set of questions your customers ask. Think of questions about your services, prices, comparisons and problems. Use your own customer contact and Google Search Console as sources. If you serve different target groups, write questions per persona. See which questions customers ask AI.
Step 2: see who AI mentions
Ask each question to several AI assistants. For each question, note:
- whether you are mentioned;
- which competitors are mentioned;
- which sources the answer cites.
Do not do this just once, because AI answers change. Look over a few weeks to get a reliable picture.
Step 3: compare with your competitor
Take the questions where a competitor is mentioned and you are not. Look at what that competitor does differently:
- Do they have a separate page on this topic?
- Is there a clear answer at the top, with prices or examples?
- Are they on the websites AI cites as sources?
- Do they have more or more recent reviews?
You will usually spot a pattern quickly. More on this in why does AI mention your competitor.
Step 4: list the gaps
Put everything in a simple table with these columns:
- the question;
- who is mentioned;
- the type of gap (topic, answer or source);
- what you will do;
- priority.
An example for an online shop selling garden furniture:
- Question: "Which garden furniture can stay outside all winter?" AI names two competitors. You have no page about care or weather resistance. Type: topic gap. Action: write a guide per material.
- Question: "Where can I buy a lounge set with fast delivery?" You are not mentioned. Your delivery time is only in the terms and conditions. Type: answer gap. Action: show the delivery time on product pages.
- Question: "Best online shop for garden furniture?" AI cites a comparison site you are not listed on. Type: source gap. Action: contact that site.
Step 5: close the gaps, most important first
Start with the questions that pay off most: questions that lead directly to a customer or a sale. A few tips:
- Answer the question in the first paragraph. AI likes a clear, short answer. Read writing content AI cites.
- Be specific. Prices, delivery times, service area and conditions. Vague copy is rarely cited.
- Use headings that look like questions. That makes it easy for AI to find the right section.
- Work on sources beyond your own site. Reviews, trade directories, local press and comparison sites.
Step 6: measure again
Closing a gap does not always work straight away. AI models first need to find and pick up your new content. So measure every week whether your visibility for those questions changes. That shows you which changes work and which do not.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I do a content gap analysis?
A big analysis once a quarter is enough for most businesses. On top of that, track your most important questions every week.
Do I need a new page for every gap?
No. Sometimes a paragraph or an FAQ question on an existing page is enough. Only create a new page if the topic is big enough.
Can I do this without a tool?
Yes, with a spreadsheet and some patience. A tool makes it faster and shows you trends over several weeks.
