Google AI Mode: what is it and what does it mean for your business?

Google AI Mode is a conversational way of searching with AI, inside Google. What it is, how it differs from AI Overviews and Gemini, and how to improve the chance that your business is mentioned in it.

Google AI Mode is a separate search mode in Google where you ask a question in everyday language and get a detailed answer written by AI. You can then ask follow-up questions, just as in a conversation. For businesses, this means some searchers no longer scroll through a list of links, but read a summarised piece of advice instead. If you are in that advice, you are seen. If you are not, you may miss that customer.

What exactly is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is part of Google Search. You open it through its own tab or button in Google, next to the regular search results. Instead of ten blue links, you get a detailed answer with explanations, comparisons and links to sources.

A few characteristics:

  • Conversational. You ask a follow-up question without retyping everything. For example, first "good plumber in Zwolle" and then "which one can also come at the weekend?".
  • Longer questions. In AI Mode people often type full sentences with wishes and conditions, rather than two or three keywords.
  • Several searches at once. According to Google, AI Mode breaks a question down into sub-questions and searches for them at the same time. It then turns the results into a single answer.
  • Sources included. The answer contains links to websites that were used as sources.

AI Mode is being rolled out step by step and is available in more and more countries and languages. Whether and how you see it depends on your country, your language and your account. So check in Google yourself what it looks like for your market.

How it differs from AI Overviews and Gemini

These three are often confused. They look similar, but work differently.

  • AI Overviews are short AI summaries at the top of the regular search results. They appear automatically for some searches. The regular links are still shown below them. Read more in Google AI Overviews and your business.
  • AI Mode is a separate mode that you choose yourself. The answer is more detailed and you can ask follow-up questions. The regular list of links is not shown underneath.
  • Gemini is Google's standalone AI assistant, with its own app and website. There you can also write texts, make plans or discuss files. So Gemini is broader than search. See get mentioned in Gemini.

All three use Google's AI models and draw information from the web. That is why what helps with one often helps with the others too.

What does AI Mode mean for your business?

AI Mode strengthens a trend that is already under way: searchers get the answer directly, without clicking through. This is called zero-click. You can read more about it in zero-click search and AI.

For businesses, a few things change:

  • Being mentioned counts more than a ranking. In AI Mode there is no fixed top ten. What matters is whether your name appears in the answer and how you are described.
  • Specific questions get better answers. Someone does not search for "garden furniture", but asks "which online shop has weatherproof lounge sets delivered within a week?". Businesses that have exactly those details on their site stand a better chance.
  • Visitors who click through are further along. Anyone who still visits your site after the AI answer often already knows what they want. Make sure calling, booking or ordering is easy at that point.

How to improve your chances in AI Mode

There is no secret switch for AI Mode. The same basic principles apply as for other AI visibility, also known as GEO or AI SEO.

  1. Keep your Google Business Profile complete. The right category, opening hours, services, photos and a clear description. Google relies heavily on this information for local questions. See Google Business Profile and AI visibility.
  2. Write clear content that answers questions. Start every page with a short, direct answer. Use headings that resemble the questions customers ask.
  3. Include the details people ask about. Service area, prices or price indications, delivery times, specialisms and who you work for. Also read why prices on your website help with AI.
  4. Work on reviews. Recent, detailed reviews give AI material to recommend and describe you.
  5. Get mentioned on other sites. Industry directories, local media and comparison sites are sources AI likes to use.
  6. Make sure Google can read your site properly. A fast site, a sitemap and structured data help Google understand who you are and what you do.

How do you know whether it is working?

AI Mode is hard to measure directly. Answers differ per person and per moment. A few ways to get a grip on it anyway:

  • Regularly ask your customers' questions in AI Mode yourself and note whether you are mentioned.
  • Check Google Search Console for searches on your business name and for the number of impressions and clicks.
  • Check Google Analytics to see whether more direct traffic or traffic from Google is coming in.
  • Track your visibility in other AI assistants. Businesses that are mentioned often there usually have the basics in order.

HelloGeoLabs does not measure AI Mode itself. We do measure every week whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude mention you, and which sources they use to do so. That gives a good picture of how AI in general sees your business.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI Mode replace the regular search results?
No. The regular results still exist. AI Mode is an additional mode that people choose themselves.

Do I need to do anything special for AI Mode?
Not really. A good website, a complete business profile, reviews and mentions help with AI Mode, AI Overviews and other AI assistants at the same time.

Is AI Mode available in my country yet?
Availability differs by country and language and changes regularly. Check in Google yourself whether you see the AI Mode option.
