Zero-click search and AI: what does it mean for your visitors?
More and more people get their answer without clicking through to a website. What zero-click search is, what it means for your visitors and why being mentioned matters more.
Zero-click search means someone gets their answer without clicking through to a website. The answer is already in Google, in an AI Overview or in a conversation with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude. For businesses, that often means fewer visitors from search engines, but it also means that being mentioned in that answer matters more than ever. Whoever is in the answer is remembered. Whoever is not, does not exist for that searcher.
What exactly is zero-click search?
Search used to look like this: you typed a question, got ten blue links and clicked on a website. These days you increasingly get an answer straight away.
Examples of zero-click:
- Google shows opening hours, phone number and reviews directly in your business profile.
- A Google AI Overview summarises the answer at the top of the search results.
- ChatGPT or Perplexity gives a complete answer, with a few recommended businesses.
The searcher then has enough information. They do not click, or only much later.
Why AI reinforces this
AI assistants are built to answer questions directly. If someone asks "Which museum nearby is fun with children on a rainy day?", they get a few suggestions with an explanation. There is no longer any reason to look at ten websites.
AI assistants do often show sources or links. But many people only read the answer. That makes the answer itself the new shop window. Also read how ChatGPT chooses which businesses to recommend.
What does it mean for your visitors?
A few things change:
- Fewer clicks on informational questions. General questions, such as "how often should a boiler be serviced?", are often answered directly. Your blog post then gets fewer visitors, even if it is used as a source.
- Visitors who do come are further along. Anyone who still clicks through already has an impression of you. That visitor often wants a price, an appointment or a product straight away.
- More direct traffic and branded searches. People remember your name from an AI answer and look you up later. In Analytics you see that as direct traffic or as searches for your business name.
So fewer visitors does not automatically mean fewer customers. It does mean you need to measure differently.
Why visibility and brand awareness matter more
In a zero-click world, what counts most is whether your name comes up. That is why the focus shifts:
- From clicks to mentions. What matters is whether AI mentions you for your customers' questions. That is called AI visibility.
- From rankings to share of voice. How many of the mentions in your market go to you, and how many to competitors?
- From one website to the whole web. AI relies on your website, but also on reviews, business directories, news articles and forums. Read more about mentions on other sites.
A plumber in Zwolle who often appears in AI answers builds brand awareness, even among people who have never visited his website.
What can you do?
Practical steps to make sure you are in the answer:
- Answer questions briefly and clearly. Start pages with a direct answer. That is easy for AI to pick up. See writing content AI cites.
- Keep your business profile and details up to date. Opening hours, address, services and prices must be correct everywhere.
- Work on reviews and mentions. The more often you are mentioned positively on trusted sites, the greater the chance AI mentions you.
- Make clicking through worthwhile. Make sure a visitor who does come can quickly call, book or order.
- Measure your visibility in AI. Do not just look at visitors, but also at how often AI mentions you.
How do you measure success in a zero-click world?
Combine a few sources:
- your visibility score and share of voice in AI assistants;
- searches for your business name in Google Search Console;
- traffic from AI assistants in Google Analytics, see measuring AI traffic in Analytics;
- what new customers say when you ask how they found you.
Frequently asked questions
Is zero-click bad for my business?
Not necessarily. You may get fewer visitors on informational pages, but being in the answer builds awareness and trust.
Should I stop blogging?
No. Good articles are often exactly the source AI bases its answer on. Do write them so the answer is easy to find.
Does this apply to local businesses too?
Yes. For local questions in particular, AI often gives a few specific names. If you are not among them, you miss the customer.
