Citations in AI answers: being mentioned or being cited?
AI assistants mention businesses and cite sources. Those are not the same thing. What citations and citation share are, the difference between onsite and offsite sources and how to appear as a source more often.
A citation in an AI answer is a source that the AI assistant shows or uses to support its answer, usually a link to a web page. That is different from a mention. With a mention, the AI says your name. With a citation, the AI uses your page as a source. Both are valuable, but they work slightly differently.
Being mentioned versus being cited
Say someone asks Perplexity: "Which physiotherapist in Amersfoort is good for back pain?". The answer might look like this:
- The AI mentions three practices by name. Those are brand mentions.
- Below the answer are five sources: a review site, a healthcare directory, the website of one practice and two articles. Those are citations.
So you can be mentioned without being cited. In that case the AI found information about you on other sites. You can also be cited without being mentioned. Then the AI uses, for example, one of your blog posts as an explanation, but recommends someone else.
The best outcome is both: the AI mentions you and links to your own website. That gives the reader a direct route to you.
What is citation share?
Citation share is the proportion of all citations that point to your website. Say the AI assistants show 50 sources in total for your questions, and 5 of them are pages on your site. Then your citation share is 10%.
It looks like share of voice, but it measures something else. Share of voice is about how often your name comes up compared with competitors. Citation share is about how often your pages serve as a source. Read more in share of voice in AI.
Onsite and offsite sources
Citations come from two directions:
- Onsite. Pages on your own website: your service pages, your FAQ, your blog. You have full control over these.
- Offsite. Pages on other websites: review sites, trade directories, comparison articles, news sites, forums and Wikipedia. You have less control there, but they often carry a lot of weight.
For many local questions, AI assistants mainly cite offsite sources. An AI often trusts an independent list of "best hairdressers in Haarlem" more than the website of a single hairdresser. That is why it pays to know which external pages the models use, and whether you are on them. See also mentions on other sites.
What kinds of sources does AI cite?
Broadly, you will see these types:
- Business websites. Especially pages that answer a question directly and clearly.
- Review and comparison sites. Platforms with ratings and lists.
- Directories and registers. Trade directories, business directories and official registers.
- Media. Local newspapers, trade magazines and news sites.
- Community. Forums and discussion sites where people share experiences. See Reddit, forums and AI recommendations.
- Reference works. Wikipedia and similar sources.
Which type carries the most weight differs per model and per question. Perplexity always shows sources. ChatGPT and Gemini often do when they search live, but not always. Claude shows sources when it searches the web.
How to get cited more often
A few practical steps:
- Answer one question per page, and do it at the top. AI likes to pick up a clear paragraph that answers the question straight away. See writing content AI cites.
- Build a good FAQ page. Short questions with short, concrete answers. Read an FAQ page AI likes to cite.
- Be specific. Mention prices, service area, opening hours and how you work. Vague copy is rarely cited.
- Track down the offsite sources. See which external pages AI uses for your questions. Is your competitor in a comparison article and you are not? Contact the writer, or make sure your profile on that site is complete.
- Keep information up to date. A page with outdated details can harm your visibility rather than help it.
How do you measure citations?
You can check yourself in Perplexity and in ChatGPT's search mode which sources appear for your questions. That is useful, but it takes time and the picture keeps changing. A tool that asks your questions every week and records the sources shows which pages keep coming back and which type of source is used most often.
In Google Analytics you can also see whether visitors arrive via chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. That tells you something about citations that actually get clicked.
Frequently asked questions
Is a citation more important than a mention?
Not necessarily. A mention makes sure customers see your name. A citation to your own site can bring extra visitors. You want both.
Why does AI cite my competitor and not me?
Often your competitor appears on more external sources or their website answers the question more clearly. Read why AI mentions your competitor.
