AI agents that search for customers: what does agentic search mean for your website?

AI agents increasingly search, compare and book on behalf of customers. What is agentic search and how do you prepare your website for visitors that are not human?

Agentic search means an AI agent searches, compares and sometimes takes action on its own, such as booking an appointment or requesting a quote. The customer only gives the instruction. For your website this means: make sure prices, availability, opening hours and contact options are clear and machine-readable, and that forms are easy to use. An agent that cannot find your information will choose another business.

What is an AI agent?

A regular AI assistant answers a question. An AI agent goes a step further. It is given a task and carries it out in several steps. For example: "Find three painters in Zwolle who are available in May, compare their prices and request a quote from the best one."

The agent then searches the web, opens websites, reads prices and availability, compares them and may fill in a form. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity all have features that let the assistant visit websites and carry out tasks itself. Those features are improving fast.

What is agentic search?

Agentic search is searching done by an AI agent instead of a person. The difference from ordinary searching:

  • A person scans a page, looks at photos and clicks around until they find something.
  • An agent reads the text and code of a page, looks for concrete facts and moves on to the next site if something is missing.

An agent has no patience for vague copy or hidden prices. It needs facts to complete a task. Also read how ChatGPT chooses which businesses to recommend, because the same basics apply to agents.

Why does this matter for your business?

With a regular AI question, the customer gets a short list and chooses themselves. With an agent, that choice is sometimes made earlier. If the agent cannot find a price on your site but does find one on your competitor's, you may not even make it into the comparison.

This ties in with zero-click: the customer may never visit your website, but the agent does. Your website becomes an information source for machines, as well as a shop window for people.

How to prepare your website for AI agents

1. Put the key facts visibly on the page

An agent looks for concrete details. Make sure this information is on your site as plain text, not only in an image or PDF:

  • what you offer and for whom;
  • your service area or business address;
  • opening hours and how to reach you;
  • prices or at least price indications ("from 85 euros per hour");
  • delivery times or when you are available.

2. Be open about prices

Many businesses prefer to say "price on request". For an agent, that is a dead end. At least give an indication or a sample calculation. A plumber in Zwolle could, for example, state the call-out charge and an average price for a common job.

3. Use structured data

Schema markup passes on facts in a fixed format, such as opening hours, address, services, prices and reviews. The agent then does not have to guess. Take a look at the LocalBusiness example.

4. Keep forms and bookings simple

An agent that wants to book an appointment or request a quote gets stuck on complicated forms. Tips:

  • keep the number of required fields low;
  • give fields clear labels ("Postcode", "Preferred date");
  • make sure the form works without extra steps such as pop-ups;
  • show a clear confirmation after submitting.

Note: spam protection is still needed. You do not have to open everything up. But a form that is awkward for people works even worse for agents.

5. Let AI crawlers and agents in

Agents often visit your site through the same bots AI companies use to fetch pages. If you block those in robots.txt or through a firewall, the agent cannot read your site. See allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt.

6. Keep everything up to date

An agent works with what it finds. If your availability or price is no longer correct, the customer gets the wrong expectations. Schedule a fixed moment to check your details.

What does this mean for different sectors?

  • Local service providers such as installers and hairdressers: clear rates, service area and a simple way to book an appointment.
  • Online stores: complete product data, stock and shipping information. More in AI shopping and product recommendations.
  • Municipalities and museums: opening hours, admission prices, directions and online booking.

Frequently asked questions

Are customers already using AI agents?
More and more people are trying them, mainly for research and comparison. Booking and ordering through an agent is still new, but things are moving fast.

Do I need to rebuild my whole website?
No. Start with the pages that matter most to customers: services, prices, contact and booking. Those pages help people too.
